Junior Rugby from Age Group 5 to 12 Years is about enjoyment, friendship, participation and the step by step development of skills.  It provides a pathway for young players to develop the skills of Rugby Union.

The future livelihood of Samoa rugby is dependent on the development and nurturing of age grade players who would compete and progress as feeders to the Samoa National Manu Samoa team.  In the past years the development of Samoan players at grass root level had been minimal at the least without proper coaching and this had restricted the dedication and commitment of out of schools players to pursue higher aspirations.  With professional rugby and Samoa to maintain its exciting brand of rugby it has to be proactive and take the initiative to provide proper development of its rugby players at the grass root level.

Introduction of junior rugby development at the primary school level is divided into two categories.  It involves simple basic non-tackle processes.

The two categories are: Age Group 5 to 8 years

  • ·          Passing
  • ·         Catching
  • ·         Running
  • ·         Picking up
  • ·         Evasion
  • ·          Kicking

Age Group 9 to 12 years

  • ·         Free flowing passing, running and kicking
  • ·          Line-outs, scrums, mauls, rucks, alignment organization.
  • ·         Team organization
  • ·          Player’s Codes of Behaviour
  • ·         Spirit of fair play to be fostered
