There are 16 provincial unions made up of around 120 clubs and boasting nearly 5,000 senior and twice as many junior players in a country with a population of just under 183,000 people. The Samoa Rugby Union was formed in 1924. It joined the International Rugby Board in 1988 and also a memeber of the Federation of Oceania Rugby Union (FORU). Throughout the years SRU has dedicated itself to promoting and fostering rugby in Samoa as well as developing and strengthening the structures and standards of the union, instigating community initiatives at grassroots level and the opening of the High Performance Unit (HPU) in 2006. Lead by Peter Horne, HPU is a dedicated program that provides a best-practice environment for players, coaches and referees alike. In 2007, Su’a Peter Schuster was appointed as the union’s CEO, with the main aim of paving the way for Samoan rugby. Schuster is widely respected and remembered as the coach of the 1991 and 1995 World Cup Manu Samoa team that left a legacy of success at an international level. |
