Samoa is unquestionably one of the most fertile breeding grounds on the planet for raw rugby talent. However, it takes more than simply bringing together the best players to form a successful team. Developing highly skilled and well conditioned players, offering regular and quality international competition opportunities, or creating a high performance culture where players are mentally focused - are just a few critical areas for a successful team. The Samoan Rugby Union’s (SRU) has a dedicated program that provides a best-practice environment for players, coaches and referees alike to deliver on such critical areas. Known as the High Performance Unit, it is a unique program delivered through a coordinated approach and covering a range of areas such as:
Established in February 2006, the program is lead by a High Performance Manager in partnership with the Manu Samoa Head Coach. High Performance Programs have been established in the Pacific Nations of Samoa, Tonga and Fiji, and also Japan. Part of the International Rugby Board’s (IRB’s) global strategic investment, the High Performance Programs focus on nurturing and developing elite players in the respective countries. The Samoan Rugby Union’s High Performance Program is one of the best in the World, as judged by the IRB review team in February 2008. Tournaments such as the IRB Pacific Nations Cup provide Samoa and the other countries with the opportunity to test the work of the High Performance Programs.
