Sevens Rugby and Samoa

Rugby was introduced to Samoa in the early 1920’s and a governing body was soon formed. The first international was played against Fiji in August, 1924.

Alongside Tonga, these nations would meet regularly and eventually contest competitions such as the Pacific Tri-Nations - with Samoa winning the first of these in 1981. Samoa has competed in every Rugby World Cup since the 1991 tournament making the quarter-finals in 1991 and 1995.The most outstanding achievement for Manu Samoa was in the early 90s.

Apart from the 1991 and 1995 World Cup 15s quarter-final appearances, Sevens rugby also brought national pride to the fore as the team won the 1993 Hong Kong and 1992 Middlesex Sevens.

Although Uale Mai was named IRB Player of the Year in the 2005/6 season, it wasn’t until 2007, some 14 years later that Manu Samoa finally tasted Sevens glory again. In 2007 we won the two most prestigious legs of the IRB circuit, Wellington and Hong Kong. And in making it through to five of the eight finals we made the most finals appearance by any team. For 2007, Samoa finished third behind New Zealand and Fiji.
